Do You Have an Emergency Plan

Whether we live in an earthquake country or a location that hasn’t seen a natural disaster in decades, none of us are immune to emergency situations, and preparing for the unexpected is the first line of defense. From mapping an escape route to stocking up on essentials, the best time to plan for a crisis is before you actually need it, and these checklist items will give you the arsenal you’ll need to get you, and your loved ones out of harm’s way.

  • • Make copies of important documents such as passports, driver’s licenses, and advanced directives, and store them in a fireproof safety deposit box. It’s a good idea to keep an emergency cash reserve as well should you not have access to a bank. Other useful items to store would be an extra set of car, house keys, and a record of current prescription medications.
  • • Keep a large storage container stocked with canned, and other non-perishable items, along with plenty of bottled fresh water. In the likely event of a power outage, consider purchasing a portable camping stove, and kitchen essentials such as a can opener, disposable serve-ware, and cutlery. Store an emergency stash of travel-sized soaps, and toiletries, along with a supply of flashlights, and extra batteries.
  • • Do you have a plan B place to stay? In the event of an evacuation, arrange for an alternative shelter situation whether it’s with a friend or family member, or the nearest hotel. Be sure to keep your emergency contacts on hand, and up to date making sure they have current information for you as well.
  • • Pets are family too. Make sure to keep your pets updated on vaccines, and with proper identification. Microchips are an added security measure if your pet loses their collar ID, and keep a supply of food, and water on hand.

Emergencies can happen at any given moment which is why having a disaster readiness plan is so important. During those times when emotions and adrenaline are running high, it helps to know your basic needs will be ready to go when you need them. While we can’t know when a crisis will arise, an organized disaster plan can provide some peace of mind.
