Sun Safety Tips for an Enjoyable Summer

Summer is here! Get out the sun-tan lotion, dust out the beach towels and fit on those bathers, cos we will be hitting the beach pretty soon. Cookouts, parades, long, leisurely hours at the pool and picnics…. Oh, the wonder of summer. While all these things are fun and enjoyable, the summer can go bad if you are not careful. What am I talking about? Sun exposure of course! Overexposure to the sun is asking for dry, wrinkly skin. Too much sun exposure can speed up the skin’s aging process and increase the risk of skin cancer. So, practice proper sun protection. Here are some sun safety tips that enable you to enjoy your summer.

Wear Sunscreen – The application of sunscreen to all exposed areas of skin is crucial during the summer months. Remember, reapplication every two hours is necessary even on overcast days. Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or more. Oh, one more thing. Before you apply the sunscreen, check the expiration date. If there is no expiration date, it has a shelf life of three years or less. So, check the manufactured date and purchase new sunscreen if expired.

Cover up – Whenever possible cover all exposed areas of skin. Long-sleeved, loose-fitting shirts and pants in the tightly woven fabric are ideal for protecting you against the rays of the sun. Dark clothing may offer better protection than lighter ones. Wear hats with wide brims that shade the face to avoid wrinkling of the skin. Straw hats don’t work. Wear sunglasses as they protect your eyes from harmful rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. Sunglasses also minimize those tiny laugh lines around the eyes.

Relax in the Shade – If you need a tan, try and do it in the shade. Avoid direct sun exposure. The shade is especially necessary during mid-day hours. This reduces the risk of skin cancer. Use an umbrella if you don’t have a shady area to stay in. This also useful when watching sports events or taking a walk on the beach. Avoid areas that reflect the sun, such as, water, sand and concrete.

Drink Plenty of Water – Most of us forget to drink water when we are having fun. This can result in dehydration. One of the most common reasons for wrinkly skin is lack of moisture. So, keep a track of the amount of water you consume during the day and night. Water keeps your skin, and you hydrated.

Sunny days are all about fun and frolic. But, don’t forget the importance of getting proper sun protection. And don’t think you don’t need sun protection during the winter months too. Those UV rays bounce off the snow, so, dab on that sunscreen. Sun safety is essential to avoid skin cancer. More than 1.2 million people are diagnosed every year in America with skin cancer. Do you want to be a statistic?
