Savor a Waterfront Community

Marine biologist Wallace Nichols authored the book Blue Mind, which delves into the mental, and physical benefits of being near water, and how it can improve feelings of well-being. Most of us can identify with the cathartic effect of listening to the waves crash onto the shore or relaxing in a canoe on the lake. Research has shown that water improves creativity, and mental clarity, and quiets the mind. Waterfront properties are a hot commodity with 55+ active adults seeking a room with a view, and a vibrant outdoor lifestyle with activities such as boating, fishing, or just morning coffee overlooking the water. Aside from being the envy of your family, and friends, buying a lakefront home is the epitome of relaxed retirement living.

Lakefront properties encourage exercise beyond the gym, and into the great outdoors. Many active adult living communities near the water provide easy access to hiking, bike trails, or water skiing for the truly adventurous. K. Hovnanian’s Four Seasons at Lakes of Cane Bay South Carolina, is the most recent installment of this premier builder, and is situated on a 300-acre lake system, and offers spectacular lakefront views with eight miles of shoreline perfect for whatever outdoor activity suits your fancy.

Buying a waterfront home makes for an idyllic venue for hosting gatherings. What better backdrop for family picnics, or a day fishing with the grandkids than a rippling lake or stream? Sunrise, or sunset, you’re guaranteed a mesmerizing view for an after-dinner stroll, or an early morning golf game. Del Webb at Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia is a resort-style lake community that makes a waterfront lifestyle all too convenient with boat storage, docks, and the chance to engage in water skiing, fishing, or boating. Residents of this vibrant 55+ community have said the only issue they’ve had was not enough hours in the day to enjoy it all!

Factors to consider when purchasing a waterfront property are a higher purchase price, property taxes, and whether you’ll be required to purchase flood insurance. Homes on the water are very desirable making them the darlings of the real estate market, often with demand exceeding supply. Also, keep in mind these properties are vulnerable to water damage due to humidity or saltwater corrosion that may increase your insurance premium. Find a real estate agent experienced with waterfront homes to guide you through the process of making this very rewarding investment.
