Health Benefits of Grapefruit

Benefits of Grapefruit

Grapefruit has been around for decades. I think the fruit was discovered in Barbados. It is believed to be a crossbreeding between the orange and the pomelo. Ok, so the breading of the fruit is not all that clear, but I have to tell you that one thing is quite clear. This is one fruit considered to be one of the healthiest on the planet. There are really powerful health benefits in this fruit that you really have to read this article to know. One thing you should keep in mind though, grapefruit or grapefruit juice can interact with certain medications. So, I advise you to speak to your doctor before you make the most of its health benefits.

Aids in Weight-Loss – I know for a fact that this is an extremely good fruit to lose weight. According to research, grapefruit or grapefruit juice does aid in weight loss. So, it is not a myth. Grapefruit is naturally packed with water and fiber. This, plus its citrus effect, helps you stay full for longer, which prevents you from feeling hungry. So, pack on the grapefruit, and lose those extra pounds!

Protects the Immune System – As we age, we are plagued with more and more sicknesses. This can be significantly reduced with a diet of grapefruit as it is high in vitamin C. One half of a grapefruit contains almost 80% of the daily recommendation of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports the immune system and reduces the symptoms and severity of the common cold. Furthermore, this superb fruit also reduces the severity of asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis.

Protects the Heart –Cholesterol is a major problem for most of us. Every person you speak to has some form of heart problem…. Grapefruit is high in flavonoids, predominantly hesperidin. This increases the “good” cholesterol (HDL) and lowers the “bad” (LDL) and triglycerides. The soluble fiber in grapefruit helps remove cholesterol from the body during digestion. This prevents cholesterol from entering your bloodstream. This, in turn, is excellent for preventing age-related health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases and hypertension.

Prevents the Formation of Kidney Stones – This is another problem that many of us suffer from. Kidney stones are mineral deposits that accumulate along the urinary tract. Grapefruit contains a substance known as d-limonene. This dissolves kidney stones and can also prevent its formation. However, keep in mind; you should avoid taking grapefruit if you are already being treated for kidney stones as this can interact with your medication.

Battles Aging – This is something we all understand. Another good reason to start eating grapefruit is that it is a good source of an antioxidant known as lycopene. This antioxidant fights the body’s aging process triggered by free radicals. The same antioxidant may also lower your risk of developing prostate, colon and lung cancer.

Do you need any more incentives to start eating this wonder fruit? I think not. So, the next time you are in the supermarket fruit section, pick up a grapefruit and make it a part of your daily diet.
