Boost Digestion with Red Wine
It's always nice to know when you can mix business with pleasure. In this case a glass of red wine a few days a week can do wonders for your gut health. Full of antioxidants, and polyphenols to combat bad bacteria, a bottle of good Merlot is the new apple a day!
Probiotics are the highly beneficial bacteria in the GI tract that help boost immunity, ward off cancer, and improve the health of your skin. Conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Colitis, and chronic antibiotic use can be greatly improved through regular probiotic therapy. Red wine is found to contain pre-biotics to encourage the population of good bacteria. It's also considered more "figure friendly" as it only contains about 20 calories an ounce. Obviously moderation is key here as it IS still alcohol, and can be counterproductive when consumed in excess.
A study published by Oregon State University in 2015, researched the fat burning properties contained in dark grapes. A compound called ellagic acid was shown to be effective in aiding weight loss by burning fat cells particularly those in the liver. It's noted that while not a cure all, it may help improve the health of overweight individuals.
Not all wine is created equal. Mass produced brands don't always allow their wines to age enough for the beneficial antioxidants to develop. Try and buy either local varieties, or those made by smaller companies to ensure you're getting the most out of each glass. Of all the reds, Pino Noir, Syrah, and Merlot are superior in terms of their health profiles. Also choose a dry option such as Cabernet which is higher in cholesterol fighting flavonoids. Combining a high quality red wine with a healthy diet is the best way to jump start healthy digestion, and longevity.
