Kick up the heat!

Healthy eating doesn't mean sacrificing flavor. You can give your palate, and health a boost by adding some zesty spices to your repertoire, and transform your recipes from mundane to amazing! There are a few key spices that I think are must haves for wellness, and gourmet flair so lets fire up the stove and get cooking shall we?

Turmeric  Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory that is readily available as a ground spice as well as a supplement.  It gives foods a warm golden hue, and contains circumin which studies have shown to be effective against the growth of cancer cells.  It doesn't have an overpowering flavor which makes it an easy addition to everything from curries to smoothies!

Cayenne This pungent pepper is available fresh, or ground.  It contains capsaicin which is used topically to relieve pain, and boasts cancer fighting properties.  Despite its fiery reputation it can actually be helpful for ulcer sufferers to aid healing, and may help stabilize blood pressure.  Try adding cayenne to your hot chocolate for a delicious spicy kick!

Cinnamon This warming spice is an antioxidant, an antibacterial, and can reduce spikes in blood sugar. Think beyond apple pie and try it in both sweet and savory foods. Sprinkled into chili or curries it provides a lovely warm backdrop and depth of flavor. For you popcorn fans out there, a sprinkle of cinnamon and chili makes for a sweet and spicy treat.

Ginger The aromatic warmth of ginger is a classic flavor in many ethnic cuisines, and is a tried and true remedy for digestive upset. That fibrous brown root you find in the grocery can look a little intimidating, but it's easy to peel and steep for a soothing tea, or grated on a microplane.  It also freezes well for recipe readiness!
