Nevada’s claim to fame is Sin City, its arid desert climate, and the Biggest Little City in the World aka, Reno. What most people don’t know, is retirement living in the Silver State offers every amenity imaginable, with outdoor recreation that ranges from cross country skiing, and hiking to fishing, and paddle boarding. According to AARP, the 65 and better demographic is projected to increase by 264% by 2030, making Nevada a hot spot for baby boomers in the market for a retirement destination. From age friendly Henderson, to gorgeous Sierra Nevada views, retirees will ask themselves what isn’t there to do?

Bordered by California, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, and Idaho, Nevada’s geography is varied with majestic mountain ranges, vast deserts, and lake regions. Nevada actually means covered in snow, and lives up to its namesake with areas like Kirkwood Mountain Resort, and Mount Rose. Named one of the sunniest states to retire by U.S News & World Report, Nevada is one of the driest states in the country, boasting nearly 300 days of sun annually. Summer temperatures vary, with Las Vegas well over 100 degrees, and high 80’s and 90’s in the state capitol of Carson City. Snowfall ranges from a gentle dusting to a white-out ideal for 55+ ski enthusiasts, and snow shoers.

Although Nevada’s cost of living is slightly higher than the national average according to Sperling’s Best Places, active adult communities throughout the state offer affordable housing options with a wealth of amenities. The age restricted community of Sun City Anthem by Del Webb is a resort style development with homes starting in high $100’s. Luxury, meets affordability in the community of Shea Homes at Ardiente, Las Vegas. Boomers, and retirees can escape the sizzling heat in a luxurious swimming pool, or enjoy a cocktail in the Fiesta Room. Real estate in the towns of Genoa, and Lake Tahoe is high end, and pricey with more affordable housing options in the Sparks, and East Carson City areas.

This paradise for 55+ snowbirds is the ideal location for an active lifestyle. Home to virtually every major retailer, Nevada is also proud of supporting the local economy. The gaming industry is a known source of revenue, but you don’’t have to play the machines to have a good time. Big boys, and their toys will feel right at home with events like Hot August Nights, and Street Vibrations. If a night on the town is more your style, Reno and Las Vegas are hot spots to catch a show, experience fine dining, and tour lavish hotels. Golfers look no further. Golf Digest ranked many of Nevada’s courses as some of the best in the country, and with 136 to choose from, aficionados will find beautiful yet challenging designs. Health gurus won’t have a problem getting their thirty minutes a day hiking through national parks, water skiing on heavenly Lake Tahoe, or hitting the slopes at Mount Charleston ski resort. Urban, or rural, Nevada offers active adults the chance to truly customize their retirement.
