A look at the surrounding
communities
–
Summerville -
In 1630 a new wave of puritans
departed Dorchester, England for the New England
Colony. Their descendants came to the Carolina
Province late in 1696, landing in Charleston.
They sailed up to the headwaters of the Ashley
River past magnificent plantations and early in
1697 founded the colonial town of Dorchester. A
century later the site of Summerville was
settled by a mixture of the descendants of these
earlier residents, seeking relief from the
summer heat.
Moncks Corner
- Named for landowner Thomas Monk, dates back to
1728. It began as a trading post with a few
taverns and stores. The Northeastern Railroad
laid its tracks in 1856 and the train depot
became the center of a new Town of Moncks
Corner. It is recorded by the South Carolina
Secretary of State’s office that the
municipality of the Town of Moncks Corner was
chartered on December 26, 1885 and incorporated
December 15, 1909.
Goose Creek
- Located in the southern end of Berkeley
County, South Carolina. Established in 1961, the
City has achieved a balance between growth, the
environment and the preservation of the small
town character. Residents live, work and raise
their families surrounded by the rich historic
and natural treasures of the low country. |
