The Bridges at Rancho Santa
Fe occupies one of the most
picturesque sites in
Southern California, its
natural hillsides, creeks
and canyons providing an
idyllic environment for
gracious, view-oriented,
custom and semi-custom
homes. Home lots in the
Estate area, for example,
provide sufficient area to
accommodate even very large
homes and expansive grounds
- as much as two acres.
Sites within the Groves
area are carved out of
orange groves, with
surrounding trees
maintained by the
homeowners' association.
The Bridges Golf Course is
among the most recent
triumphs of the prestigious
Robert Trent Jones II Group,
creator of such highly
regarded courses as
Princeville Golf Resort in
Hawaii, Spanish Bay at
Pebble Beach and Desert
Highlands in Las Vegas.
Like his legendary father
before him, Robert Trent
Jones II is noted for great
golf courses that are both
site-specific and visually
powerful.
"The natural flow of the
land suggests the routing of
the golf course," he has
said. When the natural flow
is spectacular, there's a
good chance the course may
be, too.
With five sets of tees
playing to nearly 7,000
yards from the tips, the
course reflects a
stimulating design precept
that distance is but one
element to degree-of-
difficulty, and that a
variety of strategic options
make the game enjoyable for
even the most skilled
golfers, over and over
again. A prime example is
the course's signature 10th
hole. At 315 yards, it is a
classic par 4: short,
challenging and memorable.
"Big risk/reward," is how
golf course architect Bruce
Charlton, Sr. Vice President
of Jones II Group, has
described it. "Anyone can
design a long 4 par. The
challenge is to make a
shorter hole absolutely
great." The hole sits on a
peninsula of land across a
deep natural canyon. From
the regular men's tee, a
170-yard carry tempts
golfers to take a risk, and
the challenge increases as
the tees get further away to
the north. "A heroic shot
that cuts the corner gets a
big reward," Charlton said.
"But it increases the risk
dramatically."
Once on the fairway, 75 to
165 yards remain between
ball and flagstick. "The
green tilts from back to
front," Charlton said. "Miss
it to the right and you've
got a tough downhill chip.
Hit it too far and you're in
the canyon beyond."
With the dramatic carry, the
spectacular span of the
stress-ribbon bridge over
the canyon and the natural
beauty of the creek below,
the 10th promises to become
one of the most photographed
in California.
